Far Ether

The air this time of year in Los Angeles smothers everything. Visibility is poor, sweat sneaks into your eyes, and the summer smog is in full swing. For the latest entry in our Exitos mix series, KCRW DJ Mario Cotto has given us “Far Ether,” a moving mix of molasses music. It’s perfect for sunrise drives down PCH, rush hour stop-and-go on Wilshire, and post-afterparty rides on Sunset back to someone else’s home. Get familiar and go farther.

Salon Acapulco

When I was in Guadalajara in March with Glass Candy, I stayed a few days extra after the gig, to explore a city I hadn’t been to since I was a kid and to see my godfather, who lives in the beautiful neighborhood of Tlaquepaque. On the first day off, my friend Alonso – whom I’d never met but was a friend of my friend Eamon (aka DJ Lengua) – invited me to a pool party at a hacienda on the outskirts of town. I took a cab out there and was blown away. A crazy house! Sprawling grounds! Free and delicious tequila! A giant pool! Amazing DJs! It turns out that Alonso was one of the DJs, combining with his friend Iñigo to form the duo Salon Acapulco, in which they make and DJ “hits” from the last decade but update them with a tropical, house touch. Like a Mexican version of Poolside, their music was made up of good time, daytime disco. As you can see in the above promo video, they are very good at what they do. There are rumors of a Salon Acapulco visit to LA in September, so keep their name in mind and watch this space for news of a pool party or two. After the jump we have the exclusive download of Salon Acapulco’s edit of Modern Romance’s “Everybody Salsa” (featured in the above video) and a couple of photos from the pool party. Read More

Mike Simonetti’s Exitos

For the fifth entry in EPR’s “Exitos” series, we asked our friend and Italians family member Mike Simonetti to come up with something special, and he did! Mike said this is a bit of a “best of” from June 2010-11, and it goes from slow jams about French girls into wild African disco. I love Mike’s DJ sets, as he always take the dance floor on a journey – last year in Tijuana I saw him do a six hour set AFTER his regular set, and the crowd would not let him stop. Glass Candy and Chromatics at FYF

We’re very excited to announce that Glass Candy and Chromatics will be playing FYF Fest this year on Sep 3. Both groups will have new music out by then and this will be their first all-ages show in LA in a couple of years. FYF has partnered with Goldenvoice and has also moved from the Chinatown State Park to the area around City Hall (where the Detour Festival used to take place), so we’re looking forward to a great Labor Day weekend.

Roller Boogie Fantasy

When our friend Pedro from Ed Banger Records asked Jacques to remix Breakbot’s “Fantasy” single we were thrilled, but we were even more excited when we heard what Jacques came up with. His remix is full-on roller boogie, and when we mentioned this to our friend Dan from Cosmic Kids, he took the idea and ran with it. Above is the video Dan put together of YouTube roller skating videos, and we think it’s the perfect visual companion to the remix’s audio vibe.
